Clipper Ships

The Coast and Country Clipper Ship Collection features American Clippers that sailed from the War of 1812 until after 1860 when ocean steamers became the dominant ocean-going vessels. The Clippers were designed and built for speed. They were streamlined and narrower than the slower ships, and carried an immense amount of sail. Their speed contributed to excellent profits for their owners during the California Gold Rush years.
